WASHINGTON, DC (June 23, 2022) – The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) released the following statement by NAI Vice President for Policy David LeDuc about the House Energy & Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce markup of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (H.R. 8152):
“The time is now for Congress to act on the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA) and reach bipartisan consensus on this important issue. Neither consumer data protection nor industry compliance are served well by the expanding patchwork of disparate state privacy laws. We need a uniform national standard.
We commend the bipartisan, bicameral leaders for championing this critical national priority, and the E&C Subcommittee on Consumer Protection for working diligently to advance this legislation. The NAI looks forward to continuing to work with Congress to help ensure the ADPPA establishes protections around harmful uses of data, while still allowing the valuable innovative uses of data, and not creating a framework that relies too heavily on consumer controls and micromanaging data flows between businesses.
Small and medium businesses across the digital advertising industry face greater market challenges than ever from the largest internet platforms, and we need to ensure that small publishers, advertisers and technology companies retain the ability to partner effectively to ensure a robust, competitive digital advertising ecosystem. Consumers can’t afford a digital advertising ecosystem dominated by a handful of the largest platforms with the most users.”
