WASHINGTON, DC (November 5, 2020) – The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) released the following statement from President and CEO Leigh Freund following voters’ approval of Proposition 24, the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA):

While we applaud the goals of the California Privacy Rights Act, including more transparency and consumer control over data use, the law itself, like the CCPA which it amends, is not well crafted to truly protect consumers.

We hope passage of the CPRA spurs a renewed bipartisan push for federal privacy legislation. Every American deserves the same privacy rights, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission rather than a balkanized collection of state privacy regulators. A national privacy law also would provide the most efficient approach for businesses, which now have to adjust to new rules in California and potentially conflicting laws in other states.

We urge the next Congress and Administration to come together to pass comprehensive federal privacy legislation that establishes binding rules of the road on all businesses, including bans on certain uses of data, as recommended by the Privacy for America coalition.
